The heavy American bomber B-17 is without a doubt one of the most recognisable symbols of World War II. Used from 1941 by the 8th air fleet and the RAF, this heavy four-engined bomber seemed an easy target for the German fighter planes. However, the tremendous firing power of up to 11 machine guns in flexible positions or turrets turned the B-17 into flying fortresses. The much improved B-17 F was produced from 1942 until September 1943, when the figure stood at 3405 units. It served successfully until the end of the war.
